On #WorldPressFreedomDay: A Free Press Requires Safe Journalists

The Filipino Freelance Journalists’ Guild (FFJ) marks World Press Freedom Day 2026 with an urgent reminder: there is no free press without journalists who are free to report, free from threats, free from retaliation, free from the fear that their work will get them killed.

The people’s right to know is only as real as the press is free to report. In the Philippines, too many journalists cannot.

Today, freelance and community journalists face most of these challenges. They work from the regions, cover beats that most institutional media ignores, and do so without the protections that employed journalists may have. When they are threatened, red-tagged, or killed, there is rarely a newsroom behind them to respond. Their economic vulnerability makes this worse — no guaranteed income, no legal support, no institutional backing to fight back when the state or powerful interests come for them. Worse, they bear the brunt of emotional stress. A journalist who cannot afford to keep reporting, or who reports knowing there is nothing to catch them if they fall, is not truly free to do the work. With this, the truth fails to see print and democracy falters as participative discourse is weakened.

Community journalists bear the sharpest edge of this. RJ Nichole Ledesma was one of them.

We mourn the death of RJ, writer and editor of Paghimutad-Negros and regional coordinator of Altermidya in Negros Island, killed in a military operation in Toboso, Negros Occidental on April 19, 2026. He was in the field doing community immersion, reporting on the effects of renewable energy projects on farming communities who had no one else telling their stories. Paghimutad-Negros had been repeatedly red-tagged by police and military. RJ continued reporting anyway, and was killed doing exactly that.

His death is a stark reminder of what it means to report without protection, in a country where brave journalism itself is treated as a threat, with truth as the ultimate casualty.

FFJ joins the Ledesma family and the media community in demanding justice for RJ. We demand a transparent and independent investigation into the circumstances of his death. We demand an end to the red-tagging of journalists and community media outfits that makes these killings possible. And we call on the government, news organizations, and press freedom bodies to take concrete action on the safety and working conditions of freelance and community journalists; because a press that cannot report without fear is not free, and a public without a free press cannot know the truth.

Justice for RJ Nichole Ledesma.
Stop red tagging journalists.
Drop trumped up charges vs media workers.
