The FFJ was established on October 21, 2023 through the initiative of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) and the support of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). 

The FFJ is a guild in pursuit of fair working conditions for Filipino freelance journalists nationwide. It is comprised solely of freelance journalists, and it is the only group in the Philippines dedicated to the welfare of freelance journalists.

A freelance journalist is engaged in the production of news—whether in audio, photo, research, text, or video form—for any local or international outlet, without any exclusivity or restrictions from these outlets.

2. Promote and protect the rights and welfare of Filipino freelance journalists
3. Uphold the highest ethical standards in the profession
4. Advance the professional skills of Filipino freelance journalists in keeping with the demands of a changing media landscape

1. To organize Filipino freelance journalists to push for their collective rights and welfare, including but not limited to just pay, fair treatment, and safety
2. To establish a code of conduct and definitions for Filipino freelance journalists
3. To support Filipino freelance journalists through capacity-building programs
4. To advocate for the recognition, value, and importance of freelance journalism as an alternative in pursuing independent journalism
