Hugot Freelancers: Journalism in the Time of CTTO

The Filipino Freelance Journalists’ Guild (FFJG) is proud to announce “Hugot Freelancers: Journalism in the Time of CTTO, a Forum on Copyright for Photographers and Writers.” This project aims to promote the welfare and professional development of media practitioners in the Philippines. The event is co-organized with Photography Chismis PH in its goal of promoting meaningful conversations about Photography in the Philippines.

The event is scheduled to take place on July 13, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Alt Space, Unit I 154 Maginhawa St. Diliman, Quezon City. The forum will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing both face-to-face and virtual participation via Zoom. The event is free for FFJG members, with a fee of Php 300 for non-members and Php 150 for students.

The primary objectives of the forum are to provide essential knowledge about copyright to FFJG members and other interested publics, safeguard the rights of journalists regarding their creative work, and contribute to the overall professional development of journalists in the Philippines.

The program includes four key sessions: an overview of copyright law for journalists, copyright issues specific to photography, copyright for written work, and a comprehensive question and answer segment. Topics to be discussed encompass economic and moral rights, enabling laws for copyrights in the Philippines, and critical issues such as CTTO (Credit To The Owner), fair use, generative artificial intelligence, Creative Commons, plagiarism, and failure of payment. Case studies and remedial actions for copyright infringement will also be covered.

Representatives from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines, Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights (IPOPHL BCRR) will serve as keynote speakers providing valuable insights and expertise to the attendees.

“Understanding copyright is crucial for protecting the creative rights of journalists and ensuring their work is respected and properly credited,” says Maro Enriquez, Chairperson of the Filipino Freelance Journalists’ Guild.

The Filipino Freelance Journalists’ Guild (FFJG) is a guild representing Filipino freelance journalists in the pursuit of fair working conditions nationwide.
